About Me

I'm a relatively new maker with a strong preference for Laser cutting

I studied as an Electrical/Electronic Engineer at Stellenbosch University but work now developing and supporting embedded software for a large consumer electronics company

My main obstacle to making more is a lack of time/space/money but I try to create something whenever the jones'ing gets to strong.

This site is intended as a bit of a profile for some of the things I've made all collected in one place

I'm based in Yorkshire in the United Kingdom and since my local Fab Lab sadly closed its doors, I've invested in my own 50W 40cm x 40cm Laser cutter from Red Dragon Lasers.

My influences and passions

Star Wars

I am quite a massive Star Wars nerd. I wasn't really exposed to it as a kid so it's more something that I have discovered as an adult, but I am a huge fan of the entire universe of Star Wars. I'm currently working on a Mandalorian outfit but it is taking a very long time.

Sci Fi

I'm a rather enthusastic reader and by far my favourite genre is Science Fiction. Azimov was a very early influence with my current favourites being Iain M. Banks and Peter F. Hamilton

Fantasy

I've also love fantasy for a very long time. Middle Earth (JRR Tolkien) and Westeros (George RR Marting) are the most obsessed over, but my wife's love of all things Harry Potter means that I'm often dablling in J.K. Rowling's world.

My main tools

The Pew Pewer

My favourite tool is my Laser cutter from Red Dragon Laser (based here in the UK). The model I have is the RDL-4040, so named because it has a 40cm by 40cm bed.

It can cut up to 6mm mdf and acrylic (that I've tested so far) but my favourite material is 3mm plywood. I don't really like the look of the recommended "Laser Ply" (which I believe is constructed using a specific type of glue which allows cutting at lower power levels). I usually use "Hardwood Ply" from Wickes (as it is convenient and cheap) which I think has a much better colour.

The machine itself quite a bulky bit of machinery and the venting requirement means that, unfortunately, I can't leave it set up permanently at the moment, which is one of the main limiting factors in my output. That and time to design things.
